Pinot Noir

Synonymes: Blauburgunder, Clevner or Spätburgunder in Eastern Switzerland

Genetic studies have established that the Pinot Noir, as well as the humble Gouais, is probably one of the two ancestors of several important grape varieties cultivated in Europe today. Indeed, the Pinot Noir is a very ancient vine, originating from Burgundy and whose many clones are found all over Switzerland. However, it is only in the eastern region of Switzerland that it really has a predominant role. It is either vinified alone or blended with other grapes. The best-known vintages are the Salvagnin of the canton of Vaud and the Dôle of Valais. Depending on where it grows, its wines are either light and fruity or full-bodied and heady.
